PLATINUM: These were shows that were either the standouts among the standouts, or that were stunningly unique in some way above all others.

GOLD:  These were the shows that didn’t disappoint. Those that had content, that connected, that exemplified the spirit of the Fringe or oozed originality.

SILVER: These were the shows that did not lack solid work or solid performances and that were well worth seeing.

BRONZE: These were the shows that sparkled but could have shined, productions that, whatever their shortcomings, held a promise of better things to come from the creative talents involved.

Ernest Kearney - author
Written by

An award-winning L.A. playwright and rabble-rouser of note who has hoisted glasses with Orson Welles, been arrested on three continents and once beat up Charlie Manson. His first play, "Among the Vipers" was a semi-finalist in the Julie Harris Playwriting Competition and was featured in the Carnegie-Mellon Showcase of New Plays. It was produced at the NPT Theater in Ashland, Oregon and Los Angeles’ celebrated Odyssey Ensemble Theatre. His following play, “The Little Boy Who Loved Monsters” was produced at The Hollywood Actors Theater, where he earned praise from the Los Angeles Times for his “…inordinately creative writing.” The play went on to numerous other productions including Berlin’s The Black Theatre under the direction of Rainer Fassbinder who wrote in his program notes of Kearney, “He is a skilled playwright, but more importantly he is a dangerous one.” Ernest Kearney has worked as literary manager or as dramaturge for among others The Hudson Theater Guild, Nova Diem and the Odyssey Ensemble Theatre, where he still serves on the play selection committee. He has been the recipient of two Dramalogue Awards and a finalist or semi-finalist, three times, in the Julie Harris Playwriting Competition. His work has been performed by Michael Dunn, Sandra Tsing Loh, Jack Colvin and Billy Bob Thornton, and to date, either as playwright or director, he has upwards of a hundred and thirty productions under his belt, including a few at the Bob Baker Marionette Theater as puppeteer. Kearney remains focused on his writing, as well as living happily ever after with his lovely wife Marlene. His stage reviews and social essays can be found at TheTVolution.com and workingauthor.com. • WELL RYAN, WHAT CAN I SAY? ACTUALLY NOTHING. YES, I SAW 62 SHOWS, AND I ONLY REVIEWED 42 (THE NUMBER IS A BIT HIGHER THAN YOU STATED AND A BATTING AVERAGE OF 00.667 ISN’T TOO BAD.) NOW, TO QUOTE “DOES IT MAKE ANY SENSE FOR YOU TO BE ATTENDING 62 SHOWS IF YOU’RE ONLY REVIEWING 39?” I CAN SEE YOUR POINT; HOWEVER, MY POINT IS, SEEING THE 62 IS HOW I FIND THE 42. NOW GENERALLY THERE ARE TWO REASONS I DON’T REVIEW A SHOW. FIRST, I JUST CAN’T CATCH UP. I STILL HAVE TWO MORE FRINGE REVIEWS GOING UP. YES, IT IS LATE, BUT THOSE TWO SHOWS WANT THEM UP. TYPICALLY, I HAVE MORE THAN TWO “POST FRINGE” REVIEWS, BUT THIS YEAR THE “HFF” DID SOMETHING THAT PUT ME AT A DISADVANTAGE, THEY SHUT DOWN THE SITE TO WHERE I COULDN’T GET THE NEEDED INFO ABOUT THE SHOWS TO WRITE THE REVIEWS. (THAT’S WHY I LIKE PAPER PROGRAMS – KEEP THIS IN MIND.) THIS ONLY INVOLVED 3 SHOWS AT MOST. AND THEY’RE HIGH ON THE MEDAL SCORE. SECOND, (AND THIS IS UNDERSTOOD BY MOST PRODUCTION) THEY WERE NOT REVIEWED IF I DIDN’T SEE ANYTHING WORTHY OF REVIEWING, OR I DIDN’T SEE ANYTHING I COULD REVIEW POSITIVELY. I DON’T LIKE WRITING BAD REVIEWS. (WHEN THEY REALLY OFFEND ME, I WILL.) BUT I AM NOT GOING TO SHOW THE WORLD HOW WITTY AND HARROWING I CAN BE AT THE EXPENSE OF ASTISTS BEHIND A POOR EFFORT. NOW, I WOULD LOVE TO TELL YOU WHICH OF THESE CATEGORIES YOU MIGHT FALL IN, BUT I CAN’T AS YOU DON’T TELL ME WHAT SHOW YOU’RE DEFENDING THAT I’VE OFFENDED BY MY NEGLECT. I DO REMEMBER YOUR NAME BUT WITH ALL MY PRINTED PROGRAMS GONE AND NO ACCESS TO THE HFF’S LISTING I’M UNABLE TO REVERSE- ENG. BACK TO YOU. REMIND ME OF THE SHOW, AND I’LL BE HAPPY TO REPLY.. (I’VE REVIEWED OVER TWO THOUSAND HFF PRODUCTIONS. MORE THAT ANY OTHER FIVE REVIEWERS TOGETHER. YES, I’VE HAD PEOPLE WHO DISAPPROVED OF MY EFFORTS, BUT I’VE HAD MORE WHO APPRECIATED THEM. EVEN SO, I’VE ALSO HAD TIMES I WAS “disappointed” THE HFF KEPT ME ON.)

  • Earnest, you took free tickets to our show and then didn’t review it. Now looking here, you dont even have the decency to list the title correctly. Does it make any sense for you to be attending 62 shows if you’re only reviewing 39? DISAPPOINTED the festival allows you to remain an official reviewer.
